A couple of months ago I booked a children's face painter, Lizzy the Lady Bug, for my daughter's 4th birthday party. I thought it would be fun for the kids along side some of the classic games my husband and I were planning. You know the ones: pass the parcel and musical statues? Anyway, the day arrived and Lizzy did an amazing job and was so lovely that afterwards when we got talking, I mentioned that I was a photographer and asked her if she'd be interested in a modern portrait shoot with me.
Now, it's not everyday that people wake up and think: I want a photoshoot! We might see some amazing photographs on social media or magazines of other people and wish we had the same but often there is a lot that holds us back from taking steps to book a session for ourselves.
The most common blocks I hear are:
1. I'm not photogenic enough.
Believe me, there is no such thing. Everyone has their own kind of beauty and it's the photographer's job - MY job to find it and capture it. Many elements come together to do this. Using a professional hair and makeup artist who can enhance your existing beauty is a start. Choosing wardrobe that compliments your complexion and is flattering for your body type and shape. Lighting and posing to sculpt the body and face. These small choices go a long way to capturing your own kind of beauty and creating a beautiful portrait. Of anybody.
2. I need to lose weight.
I always feel a bit sad when I hear this because essentially what they are saying is "I'm not worthy." And that is simply NOT TRUE. You are worthy no matter what your weight and I bet there is someone who loves you just the way you are and who'd love to see you embrace life and get in front of the camera! Again, wardrobe choice, lighting and posing go a very long way to flatter any body shape. So don't deny yourself the experience to be who you are and create something meaningful.
3. I'm so awkward in front of the camera.
Yes. You are. When NO ONE IS GUIDING YOU to look your best. How many times have you had your photo taken when you weren't ready AND THAT'S THE ONE THAT GETS SHARED ONLINE or printed for the family album? After a while you trust NO ONE to take your photo do you? Or, you convince yourself that you're awkward in front of a camera. Again, a professional photographer will take care of you and guide you through so there are no weird expressions just relaxed and natural beauty.
Lizzy had some of these concerns herself when I asked her if she'd be interested in a studio portrait shoot but I was able to reassure her and let her know that I'd take care of her. After all, I want all my clients to enjoy the experience and to end the session feeling empowered and more connected to themselves. I also want them to feel really good about their photographs. So we set a date for our session.
In the meantime I booked the hair and makeup artist and spoke to Lizzy about wardrobe and made suggestions on what I thought would really suit her look. I also asked Lizzy if she had any pieces she loved and would like to be photographed in.
On the day of our session we had a great time and photographed six different looks. It was a lot of fun and Lizzy's confidence in front of the camera just grew and grew as time when on.
I love how these portraits turned out and judging by Lizzy's testimonial I think she did too!
